Bilal Sekou
Learning How to Fight for Change

Full Reflection

Mr. Sekou answered a question that I had long had. If I believe in something, and have the desire to do something to change an important issue to myself, how do you do it? He gave very clear steps on how to actually do it. He started out by explaining the “research” phase. Staying informed is one of the most important things I have learned, by being a part of Global Studies. Becoming the “expert,” as Mr. Sekou put it, in whichever field you're diving into allows you to show your commitment in an issue. He then explained the importance of knowing the overall context and condition for the world or community you are living in. Knowing the opinions of others and the opposition you may face allows you to better conduct yourself when in action. Finally, making a plan. Giving support where you can financially or by participating in marches or volunteering for cause-helping events. I was prompted by his explanations to think about what comes after those three steps. I concluded that you have to be able to be reactionary; see what happens after whichever support you gave. Ask questions and try to understand how your actions affected the greater community or the issue as a whole. How did the perspective of the issue change and were there any new obstacles that arose because of your actions? Assess the outcome and rethink an approach if need be. Through these ways of thinking and being, we are able to smartly and effectively fight for whichever cause we strongly believe in.
